Updated: Alleged drunk driver hits pole causing large outage in Orleans

ORLEANS – On Sunday at about 7:40 p.m. Orleans Police and Fire departments were dispatched to a reported utility pole fire in the area of Speedway (formerly Hess) gas station.

While responding, additional calls were received that a vehicle had struck a pole at the intersection of South Orleans Road (Route 28) and Harwich Road (Route 39). Arriving officers located a 2008 Ford Ranger against the utility pole in the traffic island of that intersection. The resulting power outage affected about 1,300 customers in the immediate area.

Following the investigation, Officer Sean Reed placed the operator of the truck, Dean Nakamoto, 61, of Brewster, under arrest for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (4th offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation.

Neither the passenger nor operator were injured during the crash. Nakamoto was arraigned in Orleans District court Monday morning.
