– Provincetown Police along with other local departments and the State Fire Marshal want to remind the public with the 4th of July coming up Saturday, that from 2005-2014 there have been 785 major fire and explosion incidents involving illegal fireworks reported to the Massachusetts Fire Incident Reporting System (MFIRS).

In this same time, 49 people were treated at Massachusetts emergency rooms for severe burn injuries from fireworks (burns covering 5% or more of the body) according to the Massachusetts Burn Reporting System (M-BIRS). Nearly two-thirds of these victims were children and youths under the age of 25.

MGL Chapter 148, S. 39 states that it is illegal for private citizens to use, possess or sell fireworks in Massachusetts, or to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them into the state. The law prohibits any article designed to produce a visible or audible effect.

The possession, use and cause to explode fireworks are punishable by a $100 fine and confiscation of the fireworks.

Leave the fireworks to the professionals and enjoy the 4th of July!
