Provincetown’s beloved “The Dancing Cop” passes away at 92


PROVINCETOWN – Donald Thomas, known by generations of locals and visitors alike as “The Dancing Cop” in Provincetown has passed away at the age of 92. Thomas was a fixture for decades with his unique style of directing busy summer traffic in Lopes Square.

Provincetown Police posted on social media “Our community is waking this morning to the sad news that former Provincetown Police Officer Donald “The Dancing Cop” Thomas passed away in his sleep, he was 92.

Officer Donald Thomas joined the Provincetown Police Department in 1947 as an auxiliary and then transition into the role of summer policeman. At some point in the 1970s, he became a traffic cop icon in Lopes Square, effortlessly spinning, sidestepping, pivoting, but most of all moving the cars along in Lopes Square.

Donald served as ambassador to many visitors from around the world who would visit our community each summer. His warm manner and his mission to interact with the youngsters that he met on patrol made him a joy to work with. Donald will be terribly missed and we thank him for his service and friendship.

We join his family in their time of grief and offer hope and support during this terrible loss.”
