Recent arrest activity in Wareham

WAREHAMFrom Wareham Police: On Friday, October 26, at about 3:45 p.m. Wareham Police Officer Jennifer Braley responded to the area of Gibbs Avenue for a report of two vehicles that had just been struck. The vehicle that hit these cars fled the area toward Marion Road with heavy damage. Within minutes, police received a call that the suspect vehicle pulled into a driveway on Broadmarsh Avenue. Officer Braley went to the address in question, and located the vehicle with heavy fresh damage. After investigation, Officer Braley determined that the operator was impaired and had to be transported to Tobey Hospital by Wareham EMS. Jeffrey Hiltz, 50, of Rockland, is being summoned to court on the following offenses;

  • OUI Liquor

  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle

  • Operating with a suspended license

  • Leaving the scene of a property damage accident

Later, at about 4:45 p.m. Officer Calib Larue was on patrol in the area of Blackmore Pond Road, when he observed an individual walking that he knew to have multiple warrants. When Officer Larue attempted to place the subject under arrest he fled, running down Blackmore Pond Road and a brief foot chase ensued. Officer Larue caught the subject, however both fell to the ground as the man was resisting arrest. Sergeant Daniel Henderson arrived on scene and assisted in subduing the suspect. Michael D. Smith, 28, of Wareham, was arrested and charged with, resisting arrest, as well having four outstanding warrants. Mr. Smith was transported to Tobey Hospital for evaluation of a minor injury. In addition, Officer Larue sustained a minor injury as a result of the scuffle. Mr. Smith is being held without bail, pending a court appearance on Monday at Wareham District Court.

About one hour later, Officers Larue and Braley were involved in a violent struggle with a subject at a domestic incident. When attempting to arrest the subject Officer Larue was attacked, requiring a call for back-up. Sgt. Henderson, Officers Eric Machado and Blaise Lalli arrived and the male was finally subdued, arrested, and taken to the police station for booking. Due to a change in Massachusetts Laws in 2014, nothing further can be revealed publicly about this particular arrest.

Later at about 10:00 p.m., Officers Larue and Nate Aronson arrested Tina Hill, 46, of no certain address, and Sherry Schifino, 58, of Onset, near Tobey Hospital. Ms. Hill had one warrant for her arrest and Schifino had two warrants.

Michael Gratis

On Saturday, October 27, at about 7:44 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the area of Brandy Hill. Further information was that a male was striking himself in the face and was shirtless. Arriving at the scene, Officer Christopher Corner encountered Michael Gratis, 35, of Cotuit. Officer Corner asked him if he was ok, and Mr. Gratis then challenged him to a fight, bladed his body yelling, “Come and get some.” Officer Corner, assisted by Officer Aronson, arrested Mr. Gratis after a brief struggle. He is being charged with, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and resisting arrest.
