HARWICH – An off-duty firefighter and a bystander are credited with saving the life of a driver after his vehicle rolled over and burst into flames on Route 6 eastbound past exit 10 in Harwich around 8:15 PM Friday evening. Harwich Fire tells Cape Wide News that before crews arrived off Duty Firefighter Josh Ford arrived on the scene and along with another bystander immediately went to the car. The vehicle’s gas tank had ruptured and fire was coming out from underneath the car. The two grabbed the tire iron from the trunk of the vehicle and broke out the rear passenger window to gain access to the passenger compartment as the fire was blocking the drivers’ side. They then helped the driver out of the car and back to the Rest Area.
Harwich Fire personnel extinguished the car fire and evaluated the driver. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries that were not-life-threatening. Brewster Fire personnel assisted with the extinguishment.
The crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police. Route 6 Eastbound was closed at Exit 10 for approximately an hour.
As officials were towing the vehicle away, another two-vehicle crash occurred at the same location. Three people were treated and released at the scene. Both of those vehicles were towed. State Police are also investigating that crash.
