PROVINCETOWN – A repair to a underground water drainage pipe will necessitate the temporary closure of Route 6 inbound today (Wednesday) morning.

Starting at 6:30 AM crews from the Provincetown DPW will begin excavating this area to make repairs to a road defect caused by a failed culvert under the highway pavement proximate to the Dunes Edge Campground.

Inbound traffic will be detoured onto Snail Road for approximately 4-5 hours while the repair is being made.

Please note the following road closures.

US Route 6 eastbound closed (inbound) from Snail Road to Conwell Street

Snail Road closed north from Shore Road to US Route 6.

Vehicle traffic on Route 6 W outbound will not be affected.

To get the job done, we will have to dig out the entire existing culvert and that will require us to close the road until we can get the new culvert in place. We understand that this may disrupt the ability of residents to come and go for a matter of hours, so we want to give you a heads-up about the work schedule so you can plan ahead for the morning.

Residents should know that in an emergency situation, we could have it passable in a matter of minutes, but to get the job done in the most efficient and rapid manner, we will have to close this area to all non-emergency traffic for a couple hours. This is essential work that must be completed before the cold weather arrives. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate our residents understanding.

Residents with any questions about the project and the road closure scheduled for Wednesday September 13th can contact DPW Operations Director Sherry Prada at 508-487-7060 or [email protected]
Update: Route 6 was reopened about 11:40 AM.
