Updated: Bicyclist struck and killed by car on Route 6 in Eastham

EASTHAM – On Friday at approximately 2:58 p.m. the Eastham Police Department and the Eastham Fire and Rescue Department responded to 4250 State Highway (Route 6) in Eastham near the Main Street Mercantile for a motor vehicle versus bicyclist crash.

Motorists on scene assisted the bicyclist by providing CPR until Eastham Fire and Rescue Personnel arrived.  The bicyclist was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Eastham Fire and Rescue and subsequently succumbed to injuries.  The bicyclist was later identified as Laurie Sutton, 61, of Eastham.

The vehicle involved was a northbound black 2008 Nissan Versa hatchback. The driver, Izabela Costaval, 21, of Brewster was not injured.  The Eastham Police Department closed Route 6 between Brackett Road and Massasoit Road while the scene was processed.  Traffic was diverted onto secondary roads for approximately 2 ½ hours.  Eastham Police were assisted by Wellfleet Police, Orleans Police, the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Mass DOT.  The incident remains under investigation by the Eastham Police and the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team.
