Inmate cuts interior baseboard for paint and trim at Whelden Memorial Library in West Barnstable
BOURNE – Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings today released 2018 calendar year stats for the work performed by his Community Service Inmate Work Crews. The year-end tally was 16,120 hours of inmate work, totaling approximately $481,665 worth of donated labor for projects in all but one of the Cape’s 15 towns.

Inmates provided labor on projects across Cape Cod including sprucing up as part of the outdoor renovations at the East Falmouth Library, landscaping and fence painting at the historic Coast Guard Museum in Barnstable Village, carpentry and painting at the Drama Guild in Chatham and boardwalk repair at a Yarmouthport beach. In addition, BCSO inmates waded into town waterways to help Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services sustain and propagate the town’s quahog population and they provided off-loading services of food supplies at town pantries in Hyannis and Pocasset on several occasions throughout the calendar year.

“Big or small,” says Sheriff Cummings, “these undertakings were labor intensive and performed to the satisfaction of project recipients. In many cases here, we turned what was a ‘budget buster’ into something doable. It gives me great personal satisfaction to be able to help both taxpayers and some of the numerous non-profits that do good work in communities on the Cape.”
