Sheriff’s inmates perform community service at Falmouth Harbor Sailing School

FALMOUTH – From Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office: Work performed by five Barnstable County inmates will enable the non-profit Falmouth Harbor Sailing School (FHSS) to maintain affordable tuition for youngsters currently enrolling in this year’s summer course. The crew was dispatched to the club by Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings to ready the sailboats for the water.

Affordable tuitions equate to “a quality sailing class for many whose family could not otherwise afford it,” notes Joseph Voci, FHSS president. Voci and fellow organizers will now be able to apply much of the savings realized by inmate labor to help maintain affordable tuitions. The labor’s estimated value is about $2,100.

The inmates spent two days cleaning, power-washing and in some cases painting a 10-boat inventory. The sailing school accepts applications from any Falmouth youth, aged 8 to 18. In a typical year about 150 of them attend the eight-week class.
