Smoke scare prompts evacuation of building at Cape Cod Community College campus

West Barnstable Fire/CWN

WEST BARNSTABLE – A hazy smoke condition prompted the evacuation of a building at Cape Cod Community College off Route 132 in West Barnstable. Firefighters initially believed a faulty light ballast was to blame but it was later reported a fire extinguisher had apparently been discharged. No injuries were reported.

In a statement, West Barnstable Fire reported a Response to the College: Yesterday afternoon, the WBFD and Barnstable FD jointly responded to the Gym at the CCCC. Initially the call was for an automatic fire alarm (AFA), but then callers reported smoke in the hallway so the incident was upgraded to a building fire. It turned out to a mischievous discharge of a dry chemical fire extinguisher. Seven trucks with 19 firefighters responded.
