SPECIAL REPORT: Dangerous storm brings hurricane force winds downing trees and cutting power to nearly 18,000

CAPE COD – A dangerous storm made its presence felt on Cape Cod with hurricane force wind gusts overnight. The BCREPC reported the Multi Agency Cordination Center (MACC) was active as of 10 PM (No shelter openings planned at this time). Watch this article for continuing coverage:
12:00 PM update: Power outage tally at 1,931, 771 in Falmouth.

9:00 AM update: (Tuesday) More progress made overnight with outages down to just over 2,200, almost half of those in Falmouth.

11:00 PM update: Slow progress continues with power outages down to just over 5,250. Largest are Barnstable with 1,937, Falmouth with 1,538 and Bourne with 1,345.

6:00 PM update: Power outages down to just under 7,000. Falmouth and Barnstable continue to be hardest hit.

1:00 PM update: Chatham Firefighters rushed to the Chatham Bars Inn on Shore Road shortly after noon for a reported fire. A small fire in a break room was out when they arrived. One civilian was evaluated for smoke inhalation. Power outage tally is just over 14,000, again harest hit are in Falmouth and Barnstable.

12:00 PM update: There is an updated post on the NWS site reporting a 93 MPH wind gust in Mashpee. Power outage count has ticked up slightly to 13,952. Falmouth and Barnstable are hardest hit with over 3,800 each.

Astronomical tides were fortunately low so no major coastal flooding occured. However, Falmouth Police posted the above photo of Menauhant Road, between Maravista Avenue & Beach Street closed due to beach sand that covered the road. Crews were actively clearing the road. 10:45 AM update: Clean up continues but power restoration is painfully slow. 13,699 still out at this hour.

In Chatham, utility crew struck a water line on Pond View at Kitty (below). That area was without water. Crews are working now to restore. Traffic is limited in the area.

8:00 AM update: Bourne Police report that a section of Route 3 was closed just prior to Sagamore Bridge due to damaged utility pole (above). Power outage on area traffic lights on Scenic Highway also impacting traffic. Expect significant delays. State Police reported the pole was struck by lightning.

Brewster Police/CWN

Brewster Police report that The east end of Stonybrook Road is closed between Route 6A and Paines Creek Road. Utility company is on location working the problem. Please use an alternate route.

Harwich Police report that Lower County between Grey Neck Road and Pleasant Road is closed due to live wires down. Main Street remains closed between Queen Anne and Lothrop Ave. Oak Street between the driveways of the Community Center is also closed due to a snapped pole. Please use the community center lot to get around this. A large tree has fallen across the roadway in the area of 300 Main Street (between Queen Anne Road and Lothrop Avenue). Please use alternate routes to get around the area.

Sippewisset Road – Falmouth Police/CWN

Falmouth Police report that Main Street at Green Street, Main Street at Lantern Lane, Sippewissett Road near Beccles Road, 516 Old Meetinghouse Road, Waquoit Highway near Waquoit Landing Road, Woods Hole Road at Fire Station are all closed, East Falmouth Hwy/Davisville Road has no traffic out, as does Woods Hole Road at Oyster Pond Road.

Worst of winds has passed but strong westerly winds will persist for much of the day. Just over 15,000 with out power, mostly on upper Cape including 3,800 each in Falmouth, Mashpee and Barnstable. Another 15,000 are out in Plymouth, Wareham and Carver.

5:00 AM update: NWS list of  wind gusts is impressive: Mashpee 82!, Barnstable 75, Wellfleet 72, Chatham 67, East Falmouth 65. Power outage tally is down to 13,858. Over 7,000 are out in Plymouth.

4:30 AM update: Large tree and wires down blocking Main Street (Route 6A) in Barnstable near Old Jail Lane.  Over 6,000 without power in Falmouth with 3,500 in Mashpee and 3,200 in Barnstable. Total is now up to nearly 18,000. Wareham DNR reported significant damage to the Onset Pier floating docks:

4:15 AM update: Power outages on Cape now over 13,500. 5,000 are out in Plymouth and nearly 4,500 on Martha’s Vineyard.

3:45 AM update: Per NWS a ham radio operator reported a 78 MPH wind gust in Mashpee at 3:31 AM! Several reports of trees down mainly on the upper Cape. Power outages have now swelled to over 10,000 across the Cape.

3:15 AM update: Bourne Fire reports large tree down on Sandwich Road under the Bourne Bridge blocking the entire road. Another tree reported down on Shore Road in Bourne. Power outages continue to mount. 2,446 in Bourne, 2,335 in Wellfleet, 1,465 in Sandwich, 1,455 in Bourne, 939 in Barnstable, 796 in Mashpee and 284 in Yarmouth with a total of 9,720

2:45 AM update: Flood Warning until 6:45 AM. 71 MPH wind gust in Mashpee. Many more power outages since last update. 880 in Sandwich, 668 in Falmouth, 543 in Barnstable, 300 in Bourne, 284 in Yarmouth and 118 in Mashpee for a total of nearly 2,800.

2:00 AM update: Two people were injured in a car vs pole crash in Yarmouth sometime after 1 AM. The crash happened on Forest Road by the Yarmouth Senior Center. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. 64 MPH wind gust reported in Mashpee. Latest power outage report: 304 in Bourne, 284 in Yarmouth, 130 in Barnstable, 25 in Dennis and 23 in Falmouth.

12:30 AM update: NWS has issued a statement warning of hurricane wind gusts for next 1-3 hours. This as the remnants of Phillipe entrain into the storm system moving through. Latest power outage report shows 299 in Bourne, 126 in Barnstable, and 13 in Falmouth.

11:30 PM update: An amateur radio operator reported a 59 MPH wind gust in Mashpee. Earlier Brewster outage is restored. 179 out in Bourne with 78 in Dennis, 75 in Yarmouth and 38 in Barnstable. Over 500 customers are in the dark on Martha’s Vineyard. NWS reported a tree down on Asa Meiggs Road in Marstons Mills.

10:00 PM update: Power outage reports starting to come in. Eversource reports 755 customers out in Brewster, with 105 in Orleans, 47 in Harwich, 80 in Falmouth, and 106 in Bourne. That totals to 1,093. NWS reported a tree down blocking Old Main Street in Sandwich, and a large limb down on Brick Kiln Road in Falmouth.
