Spring Cleanup at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds by Sheriff’s Inmates

FALMOUTH
From Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office: A crew of inmates dispatched by Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings have erased winter and other blemishes at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth, home every year to the Barnstable County Fair.  The round of raking, window replacement, painting, fence repair and the like will have the venue ready to host its 175th fair this summer.

By saving almost $3,600 in labor costs, fair organizers will also have a leg-up in making its annual goal of $40,000 in scholarship money. Those awards are distributed to students across Cape Cod, so long as their intended major is in an agriculturally related field. Wendy Brown, general manager of the non-profit organization, says that runs the gamut “from culinary arts to turf management, from landscape design to marine biology, and encompassing a host of other occupations popular on the Cape.”

Brown says having only one full-time groundskeeper on its payroll makes inmate labor “absolutely essential to getting the job done.”
