State Trooper exposed to fentanyl during stop in Hyannis

HYANNIS – A State Police trooper was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in the overnight hours Thursday after being exposed to fentanyl during a stop in Hyannis.

Hyannis Fire and Rescue responded to the intersection of South and Ocean Street around 12:30 where they found the trooper who had been exposed to the drug.

According to State Police spokesman David Procopio, the trooper observed a powder substance on himself and experienced light-headedness after he conducted a pat frisk of the male suspect.

The trooper and the suspect, the latter of whom was showing possible overdose symptoms, were transported to Cape Cod Hospital. The trooper was examined and released from the hospital at around 2:30 a.m.

The suspect, who was the subject of an outstanding warrant, was also released from the hospital and was taken to the State Police Barracks in Yarmouth to be booked.

He’s been identified as the passenger in the 2006 Pontiac G6 when the car was stopped. Arthur Ashley, 37, of New Bedford, will be arraigned in Barnstable District Court on the warrant today.

State and local police are investigating.
