BREWSTER – Shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday, there were reports of a structure fire in the area of Old Long Pond Road. Brewster Fire responded to the scene as well as crews from Harwich and Orleans on an automatic line response.
Brewster Chief Robert Moran assumed Incident Command reporting a fully involved residential structure and requesting a full working fire assignment. This brought additional resources from Chatham to the scene and moved up other Mid Cape personnel and apparatus to cover empty stations.
The house at 33 Long Pond Road was believed to be vacant and due to the structure being fully involved through the roof and with fire spreading to nearby trees and vegetation, an interior entry was deemed impossible. The fire was attacked from the outside with two large hand lines.
With the majority of the structure collapsed in on itself and just the outside first-floor walls still standing, the extinguishment became a “surround and drown” operation. As the bulk of the fire was knocked down, Command began releasing outside companies and returning Brewster units to service. The last units were released about 6:30 a.m. with one Brewster engine remaining on scene for a fire watch.
Traffic on Route 137 was passable but slowed in the area while apparatus was in the street. There were no injuries reported at press time. Due to the lack of an obvious source of ignition, the State Fire Marshal was notified to assist in the investigation of cause and origin.
