Suspect arrested for West Yarmouth arson

hathawayYARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police Department reports that on Sunday, September 18, 2016, at approximately 10:56 p.m. the department received a call from an individual identifying himself as Joseph Hathaway. Hathaway informed dispatchers that he was responsible for setting the fire at 72 Constance Avenue in West Yarmouth on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. During the course of the investigation of the fire, it was determined that the house was abandoned and reported to be in the foreclosure process. During the investigation, it was further determined that the fire was deliberately set.

According to Yarmouth Police, Hathaway, 26, indicated that he desired to set another fire, and requested officers respond to arrest him. Officers responded to the scene and brought him to the Yarmouth Police headquarters where Yarmouth Police Detective David Schneeweis interviewed him.

Based on the results of the interview and evidence collected, Hathaway was taken into custody. He was held overnight and transported to the Barnstable District Court for arraignment Monday morning charged with felony arson of dwelling house, felony breaking & entering building nighttime for felony and felony destruction of property.
