UPDATED: Suspects wreck stolen truck, flee in stolen kayaks, then steal another vehicle


WEST DENNIS
– Dennis Police report that on Sunday at 2:27 PM, officers were dispatched to the area of Porter Lane, West Dennis, for a report of a motor vehicle crash. While in route to the crash, officers were advised that two males had been seen running from the crashed vehicle.

On arrival at the crash officers determined that a Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed, failed to negotiate a turn and then ran off the roadway onto the lawn of a home on Porter Lane. The truck then struck a fence, traveled across a gravel driveway then struck a rock and two trees.  The truck had significant damage to the front and passenger side of the vehicle and was not operable. It was later confirmed that the crashed Chevrolet truck had been reported as stolen from the Town of Falmouth.

As officers were trying to locate the two subjects from the crash, a report came into the Dennis Police Department that two male subjects had stolen kayaks from a home on Wisteria Lane, West Dennis, and were paddling across Kelley’s Pond. Additional sightings were reported of the subjects running in the area of Fisk Street, West Dennis, and through a cemetery at the corner of Fisk Street and Pond Street, West Dennis. As officers were checking this area, a homeowner on Seagull Lane, West Dennis, reported that his vehicle, a Honda Pilot, had been stolen. The information about that vehicle was broadcast to police departments in surrounding towns and the Massachusetts State Police. Within minutes of the broadcast, a Trooper from the Massachusetts State Police stopped the stolen Honda Pilot on Route 6 westbound, in the area of Exit 6. Officers from the Dennis Police Department went to the location of the traffic stop and placed the two subjects under arrest.

The subjects who were arrested are identified as:

Devon Pelrine, age 21, of Falmouth, was charged with the following offenses:

    • One count Larceny of motor vehicle
    • One count Larceny over $250
    • One count Receiving stolen property, Motor vehicle
    • One count Leaving the scene of property damage
    • One count Operating a MV with suspended license
    • One count Operating a MV with suspended license
    • One count Negligent operation of a MV
    • One count Marked lanes violation

Devin Cunningham, age 22, of Falmouth, was charged with the following offenses:

  • One count Larceny of motor vehicle
  • One count Larceny over $250
  • One count Receiving stolen property, Motor vehicle,
  • One count Leaving the scene of property damage

Both subjects were held on cash bail and transported to the Barnstable County House of Corrections. They will be arraigned this morning in the Second District Court in Orleans.

Officer Christine Hornby is investigating the incident. Dennis Officers were assisted during the investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and a Criminal Investigations Officer from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office.
