New details: Three alarm blaze damages Summer House inn and restaurant in Nantucket

NANTUCKET – A three alarm fire was reported burning on Nantucket Sunday afternoon. The blaze was at the Summer House inn and restaurant on Ocean Avenue in the Siasconset section of the island. The Mirror reported the fire was on the third floor but there was smoke and water damage throughout. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. It was unclear how long the business would be closed. Firefighters on the Cape were put on alert to possibly deploy to the island, fortunately that did not become necessary.

Statement from Nantucket Fire: At 12:50 PM on Sunday August 4, 2019, a report of a building fire was received via 911 for at the Summer House 17 Ocean Ave in the village of Siasconset on Nantucket. First fire department crews on scene found fire in the third floor. The first engine crew started an attack of the fire from the third floor exterior stairway. Personnel on the ladder provided ventilation through windows but were unable to operate on the roof due to the unsafe condition of the roof. A second engine preformed primary searches of the building then assisted with fire extinguishment. The fire was considered under control by 2:00 PM. Further overhaul continued until 4 PM when companies were returned. A fire watch was maintained over night for the possibility of any rekindle.

The fire was elevated to 3 alarms with the notification of Cape Fire departments for the possibility of mutual aid being needed. The Nantucket Fire department was able to contain the fire to the building of origin and mutual aid was not received from the Cape.

Nantucket Health and Building Departments were notified and the property determined to be uninhabitable by the building inspector. Heavy fire damage was sustained to the third floor, Smoke and water damage to the first and second floors.

Massachusetts Fire Marshall’s office will be on Island Today (August 5) assisting NFD & NPD in the investigation.
