UPDATED 10 AM: Torrential downpours cause problems across the Cape

– Torrential downpours during the wee hours of Saturday morning left their mark on the Cape. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning until 2:30 AM. Local fire departments responded to multiple reports of flooded basements and roadways. A lightning strike was reported on Bridge Road in Eastham but no damage resulted. In Wellfleet the heavy rains may have caused a section of a dune to erode sending a vehicle over the side. The incident happened at the Beachcomber parking lot off Ocean View Drive. The vehicle was not occupied at the time. Fire officials reported the vehicle became partially buried at the bottom of the dune and they were still determining how to extricate it. In Yarmouth, water up to a foot deep was reported on Willow Street near Camp Street and Wellfleet officials reported significant flooding on Route 6 in their town. A large puddle may have been a factor in a crash on Route 6 eastbound just over the Sagamore Bridge in Bourne. According to reports, an ambulance, box truck and a third vehicle were involved. One person was taken to a hospital for evaluation. The storms may have contributed to a small fire in the attic of a home in Yarmouth. Officials at 25 Powers Lane found smouldering wires in the attic. No injuries were reported. Brewster firefighters were called to 81 Center Street. Flooding in the basement caused electrical wires to smoke. The occupants safely evacuated.

Cape Cod is pumping out and surveying the damage after the overnight deluge. We’re learning of some people being rescued from flooded cars in Eastham. The downpours may have been a factor in a water main break on Brackett Road in Eastham as well. The National Weather Service reports 8.25 inches of rain fell in Eastham with much of the Cape getting 5 inches or more.
