Nor’easter coverage: 83 MPH gust, trees down everywhere, 122k+ without power

CAPE COD – A nor’easter meteorologists are calling a “bomb cyclone” rapidly intensified overnight just offshore. A large tree was reported down on Fox Hill Road in Chatham where about 100 customers are without power. Another tree was reported down on Route 6A in Dennis. The winds are expected to continue to increase with potential hurricane force gusts especially after midnight.

11 PM update: The National Weather Service reported a tree down in Harwich on Route 28 by Freeman St. Over 2,000 Eversource customers without power at this hour across the Cape. 1,300 of those are in Sandwich with 372 in the town of Barnstable. Numbers almost certain to grow overnight. Remember utility crews may have to wait for winds to subside before making repairs in some areas.

Midnight update: Weather may have contributed to a crash on Route 6 eastbound before Route 130 in Sandwich just after 11 PM. One person was transported to Cape Cod Hospital. Many reports of winds in the 60-63 MPH range on the Cape. Duxbury reported 78 MPH and Hull reported 77 MPH. Power outages up to 5,000. Largest outages include 1,450 in Barnstable, 1,333 in Sandwich, 1,000 in Eastham and 868 in Chatham.

Breaking at 12:45: Anxious moments after a tree comes down on a car in Barnstable Village about midnight (above). It happened on Route 6A near the entrance to the Barnstable/West Barnstable Elementary School. Luckily the woman driving was not injured but firefighters had to wait until Eversource could cut power to wires that came down with the tree before extricating her. Power outages up to 7,800. 2,500 are in Eastham with 2,200 in Barnstable.

1:30 AM update: Nearly 12,000 customers without power. 3,100 are in Barnstable, 2,500 are in Eastham and 1,300 are in Brewster.

2:00 AM update: Power outages now over 16,000. over 5,000 of those are in Barnstable. This scene was happening in Provincetown at Lopes Square where wires came down and were arcing. 72 MPH wind gust in Barnstable.


3:30 AM update: Wind gust reports: 83 MPH in Wellfleet, 82 MPH in Dennis, 80 MPH in Truro, 74 MPH in Sandwich. Report in Falmouth of two trailers blown into the roadway no injuries. More than 35,000 without power across the Cape.

4 AM update: As winds continue to hammer the Cape, widespread power outages are reported with the total nearly doubling in the past half hour to 62,000. A tree was reported down on a house on Meetinghouse Road in Mashpee. There were no injuries.

6 AM update: Widespread tree damage and power outages! We are receiving reports of trees down on mobile homes at the Otis Village Trailer Park in Mashpee. At least one person was trapped for a time but there are reportedly no serious injuries. The National Weather Service reports a 94 MPH wind gust at the Chappaquiddick Ferry Dock on Martha’s Vineyard. Eversource reports widespread outages across the board with over 122,000 customers in the dark. All schools are closed and people are urged to stay off the roads, many of which are blocked by trees. Always assume downed wires are live!
