VIDEO: Two-alarm fire in West Yarmouth

WEST YARMOUTH
– At 4:21 AM, Yarmouth Fire Department received a call from Massachusetts State Police followed immediately by a 911 call reporting a fire with fire through the roof at 606-610 Route 28, West Yarmouth.

Yarmouth Engine 43 from HQ, South Yarmouth was first on scene reporting at least 50% of the building involved in fire and immediately called for a Second Alarm Assignment. Yarmouth Fire Stations 2 & 3’s response was delayed by a few minutes due to earlier medical calls.

The building was not occupied and is in disrepair, it is approximately 80 X 30 and divided into three units. The fire was fully involved in the center unit from floor through the roof. Crews were ordered to do an exterior fire attack as the structure was not safe to enter. The fire was knocked down in about 45 minutes.

Yarmouth was assisted on scene and with Station Coverage by Hyannis, Dennis, Barnstable, COMM, Brewster and Harwich Fire Departments.

At the time of this release crews are still on scene wetting down hot spots. Massachusetts State Police Fire Investigation Team from the Fire Marshal’s Office is on location assisting Yarmouth’s Fire Investigation Team to determine Origin and Cause of the fire. This is an active investigation and no cause had been determined at this time.

Deputy Fire Chief Jon Sawyer said, “The quick decision to go to a Second Alarm due to limited response while other crews were on medical calls was key to a successful outcome at this fire, the Second Alarm quickly brought in our neighboring fire departments and through our combined efforts the fire was confined to this structure only. A neighboring house and the West Yarmouth Post Office was not affected by the fire”. “All crews on location did a fantastic Job with no reported injuries”.

During this fire Yarmouth had 4 other emergency calls, one being a roll over car accident with person ejected from the vehicle. This was called in by an off duty firefighter responding from home to Yarmouth HQ Station. Mutual Aid crews covering Yarmouth’s Fire Stations responding to these other calls. One person was transported with non-life threatening injuries.
