Updated: Two biyclists escape serious injury after being struck from behind in Sandwich

SANDWICH – Two bicyclists escaped serious injury after reportedly being struck from behind by a car. The incident happened sometime after 4 PM on Route 130 near Bourne Avenue. One of the riders was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Sandwich Police are investigating the crash.

Statement from Sandwich Police: At 4:07 PM, Sandwich Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle that struck a pedestrian. Upon arrival Officers learned it was a motor vehicle that had struck two bicyclists that were traveling west on Main Street near the intersection of Bourne Avenue.

The bicyclists were 19 and 21 years old, both from New York. Both had non-life threatening injuries. One bicyclist was transported to the hospital by ambulance and the other was treated at the scene by Sandwich Fire.

The driver was a 64-year-old Sandwich resident operating a blue Ford Explorer that crashed into the cyclists and remained on scene. The operator was cited for the crash.

Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department was called to photograph the scene. The crash is under investigation by Officer Tim Condon.
