Two injured as fire tears through Hyannis building

HYANNIS – Two people were injured early Sunday morning in Hyannis when fire ripped through a home at 40-A Spring Street.

Hyannis Fire Captain Mark Storie said they received the call around 3:30 a.m. with reports that people were trapped in the building.

“When we responded, people were out of the building. There was heavy fire to one exposed building next to the fire building and heavy fire inside the fire building,” he said.

Two structures were impacted by the fire.

One adult and a child were taken to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The adult suffered burns and was later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. A firefighter was also slightly injured.

Several people were displaced as a result of the fire. The large building contains several housing units.

Storie said the cause is under investigation and the State Fire Marshal’s office is taking part in the probe.

“It (the fire) involved two buildings, so it posed a lot of challenges, but we were able to overcome them, thankfully,” said Storie.

Mutual aid was called in from several surrounding fire departments.
