BREWSTER – From Brewster Fire: “On Thursday August 9 at 11:08 am the Brewster Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 275 Red Top Road. On arrival Car 230 Captain Kimball reported heavy smoke from the roof of a 2 ½ story wood frame private dwelling. Car 231 (Chef Moran) arrived on scene and assumed command of the incident. Brewster Engine 239 arrived and stretched approximately 800’ of supply line from the hydrant. Brewster Ladder 237 arrived and began set up of the aerial device for vertical ventilation of the roof. The engine crew stretched a 1 ¾ attack line to the second floor of the dwelling where they found heavy smoke and fire in the area of the bathroom ceiling and quickly extinguished the visible fire. Extensive overhaul of the second floor and attic was required to find and extinguish hidden pockets of fire. The Harwich and Dennis Fire Departments assisted at the scene and the Yarmouth Fire Department provided coverage to Brewster during the fire.

While units were leaving the scene of this fire at 1:19 pm they were dispatched to a second structure fire at 263 Sea Pines Road. Brewster Ladder 237 under the command of Captain Sturtevant arrived on scene and reported moderate smoke from the eaves and third floor window of a three-story wood frame townhouse. Car 231 (Chief Moran) arrived on scene and assumed command. Upon investigation the Captain reported a fire in the third floor bathroom of the dwelling. Brewster Squad 241 arrived and stretched a 1 ¾ attack line to the third floor and quickly extinguished the visible fire. Extensive overhaul of the third floor was required to find and extinguish hidden pockets of fire. The Harwich and Dennis Fire Departments assisted at the scene and the Harwich Fire Department also provided station coverage during the fire. Two firefighters were injured and transported to Cape Cod Hospital. One suffered a laceration to a hand and the other suffered dehydration and heat exhaustion.
The cause of both fires has been traced to lightning strikes from a line of severe storms that moved through the area during the mid-morning and early afternoon hours.”
