YARMOUTH – On Thursday, Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources (DNR) Officers responded to a vessel in need of assistance in Nantucket Sound 1.5 miles south of Bass River.

Officers arrived on scene and were met with sustained winds from the east at 16 MPH gusting to 35 MPH. Seas were rough and dangerous. Officers immediately instructed both occupants of the vessel to don life vests. At that point contact with a commercial tow service was confirmed and DNR Officers stood by as the commercial tow service brought the vessel in tow.

During the entire event seas grew and made conditions dangerous and unfavorable. At two instances occupants of the vessel in need of assistance were nearly thrown from their vessel into the turbulent water due to the high seas and gusty wind. The tow service was able to put the vessel in tow and they were escorted back to Bass River by Yarmouth DNR Officers aboard patrol vessel J49.

As National Safe Boating Week comes to an end Friday, Yarmouth DNR reminds all boaters to prepare and be safe when out on the water.
