For the six month time period there were 3,810 emergency calls that were received via 911, answered by our dedicated communications officers. Not only are callers reporting police and medical emergencies, but fire related calls which are then transferred to the appropriate fire department by our communications officers.
The communications staff handles all radio and phone calls for police issues, but also serves as the primary dispatch for the Wareham Emergency Medical Services Department. Thus far our communications officers have managed over 2,300 emergency medical related calls.
On many of these incidents communications officers perform Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) procedures. When someone calls 911 for a medical emergency a communications officer stays on the line with the caller and gives first aid instructions over the phone until help arrives. There is no doubt that lives have been saved by their actions.
The patrol officers and detectives continue to operate at a hectic pace. In addition to the calls listed above there were thousands of other miscellaneous issues handled by these officers. The arrests, domestic disturbances, accidents, and many other calls can be very labor intensive. Sometimes these incidents require several hours to handle because of required reports and documentation that need be submitted as well as associated follow-up investigations.
The Wareham Police Department is a busy place made up of a very dedicated staff of individuals who are here to serve and protect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
As always we thank all of the residents who show us so much support on a daily basis. It is genuinely appreciated.
