WELLFLEET – Wellfleet Fire reports that they are working with volunteers from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) on a dolphin stranding off Lieutenant Island Road. Officials were working to keep the dolphins cool until they could be assessed and hopefully released, further north into open waters.
Update: Wellfleet Fire reports that they were called to assist IFAW with a group of stranded dolphins. The stranding was located next to the road accessing Lieutenant Island, a location that presents unique challenges due to its tidal nature. The road is in a tidal area and is underwater during high tide. Rising tides and limited access to the island and its residents are hazards that the department plans for.
Wellfleet Fire Group 4 responded with the forestry unit. Firefighters utilized water from the forestry unit to cool and keep the animals moist while helping to carry the stranded animals to waiting IFAW vehicles. The fire department assisted IFAW in rescuing all 11 dolphins alive.
