White powder at Nantucket Post Office determined to be horse medication

NANTUCKET – From Nantucket  Police: On September 9th, 2019 at 8:53 AM, Nantucket Central Dispatch received a call from the Nantucket Post Office that a bag containing packages had a white powdery substance on them and two workers were affected.

The Nantucket Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and Nantucket Fire Department responded. The U.S. Post Office Annex building, located at 155 Old South Road was evacuated of all persons as a precautionary measure. A scene perimeter was established by the Nantucket Police Department and the Massachusetts State Hazmat Team from the Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted by Nantucket Fire Department to respond.

Five employees of the Post Office were transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital for evaluation. All five have been released from the hospital.

The hazmat team determined the white powder was horse medication. All responding agencies have cleared the scene and area.
