YARMOUTH – From Yarmouth Fire: Around 9 PM Monday night Yarmouth Fire HQ crews responded to a critical overdose medical call on Route 28 in West Yarmouth. Just before responding units arrived on scene of the critical overdose medical call Dispatcher Chris Ruell received a 911 call for imminent child birth.
The caller was a gentlemen driving to the hospital with a very pregnant passenger who had gone into labor and when the baby decided it was time to enter this world he called 911. The caller pulled over to the side of the road and was relieved to see a fire engine and ambulance driving towards him. What he didn’t know is that they were responding just past his location for the critical overdose medical call.
Captain Morley on Engine 43 noticed the gentlemen waving frantically at them as they drove past the car and immediately sent FF Bent to investigate what was going on while the rest of the crew responded to the other medical call.
FF Bent saw that the baby was well on its way so Capt. Morley split the crews to attend to both patients. Captain Morley, FF Bent and FF Napolitan placed mom into the back of the ambulance and within seconds a little healthy baby girl was delivered. The entire call, from arrival on scene, to birth and arrival at Cape Cod Hospital took 6 minutes!
At the time of these two calls Dispatcher Chris Ruell was balancing 5 total medical calls where two of them were priority 1’s (this is the highest level), he also managed calling a mutual aid ambulance during this chaotic time.
Due to the efforts and quick thinking of Captain Morley and the efforts of all firefighters involved mother and baby are doing very well.
The patient who overdosed also survived and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital.
