Yarmouth Police arrest man for allegedly making violent workplace threats

Rogelio Lopez Jr.

YARMOUTH – Yarmouth Police report that on Thursday at 1:30 PM, they met with management of the Republic Waste Services located at 61 Commonwealth Avenue in South Yarmouth regarding an employee who had made threats over the phone last week threatening extreme violence against fellow workers in the workplace.

The company took immediate action which included initial suspension last week and actual termination effective on this date.

Yarmouth Police Department Patrol Officer Alexander Xiarhos completed an initial investigation and a follow-up was immediately conducted by the Yarmouth Police Department Detective Division.

Yarmouth Police Detectives determined the suspect was a longtime employee who had previous incidents at work and no prior criminal record in Massachusetts and no License to Carry Firearms.

Yarmouth Police Department Detective Christopher Van Ness applied for and was granted a temporary arrest warrant for the arrest of the terminated employee—Rogelio Lopez Jr.—due to the threats uttered concerning the workplace violence.

With the arrest warrant in hand, Yarmouth Police Detectives VanNess and Michael Wells, along with Proactive Anti-Crime Unit Officer Nicholas Ambrosini, travelled to the Wareham Police Department and subsequently teamed up with Wareham Police Department Police Officers to Lopez’s residence in Wareham.

At 7:00 PM, 51-year-old Lopez was found in the home and placed under arrest on a charge of making terrorist threats. Lopez was transported to Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters for booking.

Lopez was advised of his Miranda Warning and provided a statement.

At the conclusion of the interview, Lopez was later bailed by the Bail Commissioner on personal recognizance after paying the $40 fee.

Lopez is scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court this morning.

Lopez was warned to stay away from the property and a police security detail has been hired by the company on a 24 hour basis until further notice.
