YARMOUTH – Yarmouth Police report that on Thursday at 2:30 p.m., Patrol Officer Ryan Brule observed a black 2010 Chrysler 300 sedan drive down Alms House Road near the Bass Hole Beach area in Yarmouthport.
Yarmouth Police Officers have been conducted specialized patrols in this area based on neighborhood citizen complaints of speeding, illegal alcohol and other drug use, and other suspicious activities.
Officer Brule reportedly observed four occupants in the vehicle and further observed the vehicle as it sped up on Center Street and both driver side tires crossed over the double yellow center lines. The vehicle swerved back over the lines but over corrected, causing both passenger side tires to drive over the grass on the side of the road.
Officer Brule conducted a motor vehicle stop of the vehicle on Playground Lane. The operator, 20-year-old Michael K. Karras, of South Yarmouth vehicle refused to provide his name or his license and repeatedly yelled the “F” word at Officer Brule. After repeated requests and warnings, the operator continued to refuse to provide his information and continued to yell at the police officer.
The three passengers suddenly exited the vehicle and also began yelling at the police officer while walking towards him and videotaping him with their cell phones.
Officer Brule decided to place the driver (Karras) under arrest. Despite the driver physically pulling away and resisting, Officer Brule was able to handcuff him and take him into custody. Karras was charged with failing to identify self to police, disorderly conduct and marked lanes violation.
Officer Brule ordered the three passengers to get back inside the vehicle. Two of them complied but a 14-year-old female refused and remained outside the vehicle and continued yelling.
As Officer Brule approached her, she jumped back into the back seat and continued to yell and scream.
Yarmouth Department of Natural Resources Officer Tim Parsons arrived as backup and the female began yelling at him. Additional police officers arrived at the scene and she was subsequently placed her under arrest for disorderly conduct.
A check of the vehicle found a strong smell of burnt marijuana emanating from the inside of the vehicle and blunt cigarette-style wrappers were found on the passenger side floor.
The vehicle was eventually towed from the scene and parents came for the other two passengers, both males age 17 and 18.
Both arrested persons were taken to Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters and were scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court.
The Yarmouth Police Department commends the professionalism of all of the officers involved and the citizens for reporting their neighborhood concerns.
