WEST YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police Department reports that on Thursday at 2 p.m. Patrol Officer John Lanata, Jr. stopped a white Chevrolet on Route 28 in West Yarmouth for having no brake lights.
Yarmouth Police Department Anti-Crime Unit Officer Sean Geary arrived and provided back up as the driver and passenger were encountered. During the encounter, a strong odor of marijuana was detected and the driver opened the vehicle center console and produced a small clear baggie containing a green leafy material identified as marijuana.
The driver—Demetrius T. Bennett, 24, of Boston (photo at right)—is well known to law enforcement. He has multiple open criminal charges pending for Felony Possession of a Class B Substance with Intent to Distribute. Yarmouth Police Department Anti-Crime Unit Officer Nicholas Ambrosini arrived and assisted with an inventory of the vehicle prior to it being towed.
The driver was transported to Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters. During the booking process, officers located a small corner-cut baggie hidden on Bennett’s person containing 2½ small round blue Percocet pills. In addition, $1,213 in cash and 3 active iPhones were seized.
Bennett was scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court on Friday charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with defective equipment and felony possession to distribute a Class B drug.
