2014 Heroes: Chief Michael Whalen

Mike Whalen

Miss Mary Ethel Young Community Impact Hero

Dennis Police Chief (ret.) Mike Whalen

As a dedicated Police Chief and first responder Mike Whalen had a pretty challenging day job.  Despite this Chief Whalen went above and beyond in his community to work with the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee to improve the sheltering system during disaster responses.

Sheltering during a disaster is a critical component to response and Chief Whalen led the charge to work tirelessly to come up with a plan and process that covered all 15 Cape towns and the current Regional Sheltering Plan is the fruit of his labor.

This plan has since been put into action and communication between agencies has greatly improved and residents benefit from better utilized resources and a safer Cape Cod.  Chief Whalen insists he was just doing his job, but his hard work and engagement with the many volunteer agencies that make these shelters operate smoothly, has made our Cape Cod community safer during disasters.

We thank him for all he has done for our community over his years of service as the Dennis Police Chief and his work with the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC). Ever, the reluctant hero, we honor Chief Whalen this morning.
