2014 Heroes: Katherine Cambra

Katherine Cambra

Lt. Col. Farris Posey Life Saving Hero Award

Katherine V. Cambra

“Captain, can you hear me?” Katherine Cambra asked. Katherine, a volunteer leader in the Massachusetts Civil Air Patrol was participating in a Search and Rescue exercise event and had just been dropped off along with 18 participating cadets plus their equipment when her fellow Civil Air Patrol colleague fell on the ice.

Katherine at first thought he slipped and was just stunned but when she called his name and got no response she knew it was more than that! Katherine noted that his breathing was shallow and labored; that his eyes were open and was losing color. In fact he was starting to turn blue. Shouting for someone to call 911, Katherine began CPR and after about three minutes he began to move and make gurgling noises.

When his breathing became more regular his head and neck were braced to prevent any further injury.  Katherine stayed with him while he was transferred to the hospital providing important information about the event.

During this traumatic incident, Katherine kept calm and professionally and quickly provided CPR and First Aid.  Her skills and ability to identify the appropriate emergency medical response directly affected the positive outcome.
