Lt. Col. Farris Posey Life Saving Hero Award
Major John Keel
“Major, why is there blood on your shoes?” He had not told anyone what happened on the way to drill that morning. With little regard for his own safety Major Keel had responded to a motorist flagging him down. A car was in the woods, wedged in the trees, airbags deployed with twisted metal and glass everywhere. A man was lying partially upside down on his back and bleeding heavily from both his arm and leg which were mangled. Knowing he was in was in severe pain; Major Keel tried to apply pressure to his arm to slow the bleeding but was unable to reach him effectively. He passed a piece of clothing to the man and directed him to apply pressure with his good arm. Several minutes later the EMS arrived. The driver suffered severe fractures and may have lost an additional amount of blood, possibly a life threatening amount, had Major Keel not begun first aid. Major Keel embodies the values of integrity and service above self.
