Cranberry Harvest On A Harwich Bog

Mid-October is Cranberry Harvest season for most Cape Cod Cranberry Bogs…Fred Jenkins has bogs in Harwich & Barnstable, the Harwich one is ready to harvest…First the bog is flooded, then a cultivating machine loosens the cranberries from their vines…cranberries are hollow inside so they float and are now ready to harvest…a long rubber boon circles a bunch of cranberries and draws them tighter while they are sucked through tubing onto a conveyor belt, rinsed and loaded into a truck bed…This is repeated until all cranberries are collected…A truck holds about 40,000 lbs of cranberries…From there its over the bridge to Ocean Spray located in Carver…Interesting fact: the redder the cranberry the more sun it got during growth–thus whitish cranberries got little sun and grew underneath redder ones or under plant leafs…A special thanks to Robbi Reynolds (a Rochester bog owner) who explained this and much more to me as we watched this cranberry harvest…Enjoy!

By Spencer Kennard

As a child, spending summers in North Truro, I thought Cape Cod began at the Wellfleet Drive-In and ended at Provincetown.  As a photographer, I now know that all the Cape towns leading to the canal have their own unique beauty and charm.

Roughly 30 years ago, I had the good fortune to work with the legendary photographer Dick Kelsey and as owner of Kelsey-Kennard have specialized in aerial photography as well as landscape/scenic, portraits, weddings, and photographing events on the Cape, the Islands, and beyond.

Photographs from our Gallery in Chatham are displayed in homes and businesses locally and world-wide.

Besides photography I also enjoy boating/ fishing (fish are usually very safe when I’m out there,) gardening and tennis.  Cape Cod is a very special place and I look forward to sharing my images with you as I travel about.
