The Island of Monomoy lies to the South off Chatham’s mainland.  It is roughly 8 miles long with some sections 1/2 mile or more wide while other sections are a little over 1/10 of a mile wide. The shape of Monomoy continues to change from decade to decade–storm to storm–it is always evolving.  This aerial, taken at mid-tide, shows the two main sections of Monomoy–the South Beach connection and 2013 breach (on the left,)  numerous tidal flats, and in the distance–Nantucket.   Monomoy is a National Treasure in beauty and a photographers paradise for visuals.

Monomoy is part of the National Seashore and a wildlife refuge. Boats, kayaks, etc. are the only way to get to the island.  Besides numerous shorebirds, deer and coyotes also hold residence and seals overpopulate the coastline.

Exploring Monomoy is best done in sections over time as each piece is a natural wonder.  The following images were taken at one of the narrowest sections of Monomoy.  Enjoy!

By Spencer Kennard

As a child, spending summers in North Truro, I thought Cape Cod began at the Wellfleet Drive-In and ended at Provincetown.  As a photographer, I now know that all the Cape towns leading to the canal have their own unique beauty and charm.

Roughly 30 years ago, I had the good fortune to work with the legendary photographer Dick Kelsey and as owner of Kelsey-Kennard have specialized in aerial photography as well as landscape/scenic, portraits, weddings, and photographing events on the Cape, the Islands, and beyond.

Photographs from our Gallery in Chatham are displayed in homes and businesses locally and world-wide.

Besides photography I also enjoy boating/ fishing (fish are usually very safe when I’m out there,) gardening and tennis.  Cape Cod is a very special place and I look forward to sharing my images with you as I travel about.
