Cape Eye On Books and Main Street Books’ January selections

Twelve years ago Compass Rose, a long-operating store in Orleans, closed its door. From across the street Don Krohn and Janis Brennan, co-owners of Orleans Whole Food Store, watched with regret as the lights went off.

Reflecting on that time, Don recalls thinking how important it is for a community to have a local bookstore. Looking at the empty retail space attached to their store, he and Janis made the decision to fill that void, a courageous, and some might even say foolhardy move since this was a time when independent bookstores, besieged by the chains and on-line outlets, were closing across the country. They envisioned this new shop as a natural extension of the Whole Food Store, a caring for not only the body but the mind and spirit as well. Their choice was rewarded by the support of the townspeople.

“We see it as a gathering spot,” explains Donna Rowe-Korn, the store’s manager.

On a recent day, this thought was echoed by a customer who entered to browse. “It’s the kind of place you want to spend time in,” he said. “Like a coffee shop/book store but without the coffee.”

The core of their inventory is Literary Fiction but they carry a wide choice of non-fiction, children’s books, the classics such as Austen and Thoreau, and, of course, a large selection of books by Cape authors.

Main Street Books is located at 46 Main Street, Orleans, MA. www.MainStreet BooksOnline.com.
