Parades, Fireworks, Powwow & Lots of Local Music All Top Picks For July 4th Holiday

By CANDACE HAMMOND

Last weekend was pretty much a washout, but this weekend looks to be positively dreamy. And how perfect, since it’s the 4th of July! It’s going to be in the 70s and sunny, so you can plan those cookouts, picnics and trips to the beach and be pretty much guaranteed that you won’t be running for shelter.

Film

The film "Peter and John" is playing at Cape Cinema. It was filmed on Nantucket.

From July 3 to 9 Cape Cinema will be screening the film, “Peter and John,” directed by Jay Craven and filmed entirely on Nantucket. This period drama takes place soon after the Civil War, and it follows the story of two brothers during the end of the great whaling era on the island. The film stars Jacqueline Bisset and Christian Coulson. On July 3 at 7 p.m., there will be a special screening with a cash bar, which will include a Q and A with Craven. Doors open at 6. I love local films, and it will be fun to see Nantucket on the big screen. Side note—Harry Potter fans might know Coulson from “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” where he played Tom Marvolo Riddle!

Fireworks and Parades!

I can’t mention them all, but here are a few hot spots for fireworks and parades this holiday. From one end of the Cape to the other things will be exciting!

Orleans is having their fireworks on July 5 (rain date July 6) at Rock Harbor. These will be at dusk.

Hyannis will having their display on the actual 4th! These will be at dusk at Lewis Bay.

Provincetown is also having fireworks on the 4th, at dusk at Provincetown Harbor.

Onset will have a display on the 4th, at dusk at Onset Beach and Bay.

Falmouth’s display will be on the 4th at dusk and  be at Falmouth Heights Beach

Woods Hole has a parade organized by the Marine Biological Lab, and begins at noon on School Street.

Orleans has a wonderful 4th of July parade every year, and this year will be no different I’m sure. It’s from 10 a.m. till noon. So gather on Main Street to see it all.

Chatham’s parade starts at 9:30 a.m. so be sure to get there early.

Centerville Village has a parade at 10 a.m.

Provincetown gets a little bit of a later start at 11 a.m. and will start at Cape Inn and meander its way down Commercial Street.

Hyannisport has a parade at 11 a.m.; and West Barnstable is at 9 a.m. and starts at the County Complex.

Falmouth is at 10 a.m. starting at the Village Green.

Mashpee Wampanoag 94th Annual Pow Wow

This three-day, and evening event looks to be pretty amazing. There will many, many sacred and spiritual events, as well as handcrafts for sale, Native American drumming, traditional foods and dance. It is all taking place at the Barnstable Fairgrounds in East Falmouth. It starts on Friday, July 3 at 10 a.m. and goes until Sunday. Tickets for kids are $8, adults are $13, and children under 5 are free.

KayakKayaking

If being out on the water is more your idea of fun rather than standing at a parade, this event might be right up your alley! On July 4 there will be a kayaking event hosted by the Massachusetts Audubon Society at Barnstable Harbor. They do note that the waters there can get a little choppy, so some previous experience is a good idea. Pre-registering is required, and they need to know if you have your own craft. So go here for more information and to sign up.

Music

beachcomber-microsite3There aren’t many better places to hang out on the 4th, or any summer weekend really, than the Beachcomber in Wellfleet. This weekend they’re packed not just with delicious food, but lots of awesome music. On both Friday and Saturday nights there’s Boston Naturals. Get tickets for Boston Naturals here.

One of the best things to do on the Cape in the summer is to go to concerts at the gazebo at Nauset Beach in Orleans. They’re starting up this coming Monday, July 6 with Greg Johnson and 45 RPM. The shows are from 7 to 9 p.m. and are free! They will be every Monday, rain dates are Tuesdays, through August 24. Here’s the lineup for the whole summer. Grab a beach chair and come on down. Kids are totally welcome.
