Tick Diseases on the Increase on Cape Cod

TicksHYANNNIS – Doctors at Cape Cod Hospital saw an increasing number of tick borne illness cases this summer compared to last, according to Dr. David Pombo.

Pombo is an infectious diseases specialist at Cape Cod Healthcare, the parent company of Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital.

Pombo said four different strains of tick borne illness are now being seen on Cape, some of which have never been seen here before.

“It certainly seems busy this season. It was busy last season as well but the epidemiolgy points to an increase in all of the illnesses, especially Babesiosis, then Lyme then Miyamotoi,” Pombo said.

“With the ability to identify Miyamotoi, this is the first year we’ve seen any of those cases at all,” he added about the newly discovered tick borne disease.

Pombo said he’s personally seen about 15 or 20 cases of tick borne disease this summer in his advisory capacity at Cape Cod Hospital.
