A New Christmas Tradition

Here we are again, in the midst of another Christmas season. I’m not quite as into it as I have been in past years. I can’t put my finger on it, but I’m just not in the Christmas spirit. That’s one reason why I suggested to my husband that we do something a little different this year. I thought it would be more beneficial to us if we chose a room in our home to re-model instead of buying one another gifts.

Each year since we’ve known one another, so for the past 8 years, we’ve gone out and spent hundreds of dollars on each other. A lot of times it was hundreds that we really couldn’t afford, but neither of us wanted to disappoint the other, so we bought as much as we could for each other. We also had other people to buy for too, so every year Christmas got further out of control financially. While suggesting the room re-model in lieu of gifts, I realized it might be disappointing to have nothing to open on Christmas Day. So we settled on doing stockings instead and we set a price limit of $100 each.

My husband was all about this idea! Actually, he said he presented this idea to me last year, but I turned it down. Funny, how I don’t remember that! Anyway, we chose to re-model our master bedroom. There are other rooms in the house that need work, but this room is in such bad shape that neither of us even want to sleep in there! The walls are covered (badly) in the shade of “Facebook blue” paint…it’s not pretty. Whoever painted it, I’m sure they tried, but didn’t do a good job. It’s a very messy paint job with a poor color choice. The two windows in the room aren’t level and both of them have different window pane designs. The walls have a ton of holes in them and weird blotches of plaster in random spots. The room needs a lot of work that’s for sure.

We asked my dad if he would help us paint, he’s offered time and time again, so we took him on it this time. We started this past weekend, thinking it would be done in one day. Wrong. It’s been three days and we just started on the painting part last night! My hubby hates painting so he bowed out of this chore, while my dad and I got to work. Wow, who knew sanding took so long? Not me! Maybe we’re just slow workers, it’s not like we paint professionally. When we stopped last night we had a good amount of the trim painted white and some paint on the wall. I forgot the actual name of the paint color we’re using on the walls, but to me it looks like cookie dough, so that’s what I’m calling it. I’m not sure with our work schedules and Christmas coming this weekend, that our Christmas present will be ready in time, but that’s ok…it’s a work in progress and maybe it’ll be a belated Christmas gift. At least it will be one that we’ll use every day and sure get our money’s worth out of! I think I like this new tradition and maybe next year we can re-model our bathroom for Christmas!
