Just The Wakeup I Needed

Coming off the heels of International Women’s Day, I’m inspired by all the fanfare. To see so many mentions on social media acknowledging ordinary and extraordinary women who have made a difference, is heartwarming. I loved seeing the pictures of generations of strong women (and future women). I’m sure you know one, are one or are raising one!

It was a couple years ago that my girls were really into The Kindness Rocks Project. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS ORGANIZATION! You are probably already familiar with them, but if you aren’t this is their objective:

GOAL #1: INSPIRE OTHERS THROUGH RANDOMLY PLACED ROCKS ALONG THE WAY…

GOAL #2: RECRUIT EVERY PERSON WHO STUMBLES UPON IT TO JOIN IN THE PURSUIT OF INSPIRING OTHERS THROUGH RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

One message at just the right moment can change someone’s entire. day. outlook. Life.

Find out all about the Kindness Rocks Project here.

We spent an entire summer looking for and collecting the perfect rocks to join in the movement. You know I love a good arts & crafts project, so it also entailed every imaginable color of paint and finding the perfect encouraging, motivating and challenging sayings to put on our rocks. I’ll never forget how much fun we had, painting rocks. Wonder if the inventor of The Pet Rock felt the same way? We talked about where we should strategically place each rock and about how our rocks might make someone’s day better.

There was one rock I just couldn’t part with, because it spoke directly to me. It had one simple word: INSPIRE. I made the rock with every intention of finding it a good home but realized that I could draw a lot from it. I keep it by my bed and see it every night before I close my eyes and obsess over the day (what MOM doesn’t do this?) and every morning as I’m starting a new day. It reminds me that I am blessed with two intelligent, funny, caring, beautiful and at times challenging girls. Every day is an opportunity; it’s my job to make sure they know the sky is the limit, they can be and achieve anything they set their minds to.

International Women’s Day was just the wake up I needed.  It was a great reminder to inspire and lift up all the amazing women around me. Looks like this summer we’ll be hunting rocks to spread love, acceptance and words of encouragement around the Cape.

She believed she could, so she did!
