My Thoughts on Fergie‘s Rendition of the National Anthem

This past Sunday night, Feb. 18, pop-singer Fergie from the musical group, The Black Eyed Peas, sang The National Anthem at the NBA All-Star Game and she really put her own spin on it – so much so that social media blew up with negative comments and reviews. In case you missed it, I have the link here so you can hear it for yourself.

I personally think the anthem should be done in a more traditional style. I don’t mind if a singer puts his or her own spin on the anthem in a very subtle way but, generally speaking, I like it to be more authentic.

Many people thought Fergie’s rendition of the anthem resembled Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” performance. In other words, many people thought it was too sexy and too bluesy!

You could actually hear chuckling from the players and from the crowd.

I think Fergie has an excellent voice and I believe she is very talented but this version of the anthem just didn’t send chills up my spine. Instead, it made me cringe just a bit.

What did you think?
