One of My Favorite Days

Sunday marks one of my favorite days. It’s a day dedicated to celebrating the women who made us who we are. I’m not sure if it’s luck or divine intervention but I am surrounded by AMAZING women. Mother’s Day affords me an excuse to reflect on the women who raised me, the girls I’m raising and the women who mean so much to me and my family.

The women who raised me

First of all, I think my Mother is a saint. I’m 40 years old and my Mom still worries about me like she did forever ago.  I might not be in her house or in the same time zone for that matter, but she worries about my health, my family, my happiness – in short, me. But that’s what Moms do, right? Love you, Mom.

Then, there are my Grandmas. Remarkable women who raised remarkable women. My Grandma E. gave me my first perm, ruined a brand-new pair of white sneakers taking us kids to the pond, and used to take us morel mushroom hunting.  My Grandma S. used to let me steal her cheese puffs during the Price is Right, always had something canned on the porch, and introduced me to angel food cake; she made the best.

Then there is my Sister. I’m pretty sure she only keeps me around for entertainment purposes. I don’t get to see her often, and text is our primary form of communication, but I know she’s probably reading this while her pedi is drying, guzzling down a Diet Coke. I owe her a lot. I learned how to share and how to gently dust around the Precious Moments figurines and that you can’t master a perfect pedicure without a toothpick.

The Girls I’m Raising

I love being a Mom. It’s easy to let the day-to-day frustrate, but I love every moment of every day with my kids. I’m baffled how two kids with the same start in life can be so completely different. They are both kind, caring and compassionate, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. One is sensitive, creative and puts her heart into everything she does. The other, well, she’s the reason I have so much gray hair. But I love every minute of watching them grow up and become their own people. They are my heart and soul.

My Supporting Cast

In addition, I have a remarkable cast of supporting women who I couldn’t get through the everyday without. My Mother-in-laws and my Sister-in-law – I’m indebted to you ladies forever for all the help with the things that slip through the cracks. It’s not just any woman you can trust with your children when you aren’t able to be there, but I have the best. Let’s not forget the girl posse – I need them for my sanity! Moms aren’t perfect and it’s comforting to know that there is one, or a horde, not so far away that’s got your back.

So, to all the Moms – and I don’t care if you are an honorary Mom, Step Mom, Dog Mom, Troop Mom, or Sports Team Mom – if you love and care for another living thing, this day is for you, and I salute you!

Enjoy your day!
