Patience With Your Commute

Patience — Webster’s Dictionary defines it as: bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint. No wonder this is an issue I struggle with on any given day. It’s an impossible two-step process. Not only are we expected to bear pains and trials, but we must do so without complaint.

Patience is not simply the ability to wait – it’s how we behave while we’re waiting. – Joyce Meyer

Patience is a lesson I preach to my kids daily, but still need a lot of help with myself. I can think of any number of topics which I’m currently struggling. When the heck is Spring going to arrive or how will I manage traffic back and forth across the bridge during construction? Work on one or both bridges isn’t new, it happens just about every year, but it’s a serious challenge to my patience. Sitting in Cape Cod traffic is not a battle I win often.

The thought of sitting in traffic before you even start your day or moving at a snail’s pace when you just want to be home after a long day at work is excruciating. You see those people, you know the ones I mean, jumping lines, breaking rules and all for what? To get a few cars ahead of you? They, my friends, are not skilled in the art of patience. Quite frankly, in today’s society, it’s best to let those things go, road rage is a very real, very serious thing.

It’s going to be a long three months (or more) of construction. Just for a second, let’s think about the men and women doing the repair work. You must assume not all drivers are courteous to them. They aren’t out to get you or ruin your day, they are just doing their job, just like you. Look around you as you wait in traffic. It’s soccer moms, businessmen, service workers, delivery persons; all people trying to get somewhere just like you. We can all sympathize. NO ONE wants to sit in traffic, but it’s a necessary evil on the Cape. It’s the perfect time to practice patience. I just so happen to know a couple great local radio stations that can take your mind off your wait; tune in and let us keep you company.

I always come back to the above quote from Joyce Meyer. “Patience is not simply the ability to wait, it’s how we behave while we’re waiting.”

Best wishes for your commute!
