That Girl’s Blog: Refrigerator Art

I don’t have children of my own.

It’s not that I don’t like children. It just never worked out for me to have them. There are sometimes when I watch the evening news and I think that I am actually relieved that I don’t have to try to protect a little one from the hate and anger that seems to bubble up around us these days.

Of course, an argument can be made that because I don’t have children, I tend to act like an over-sized kid in the things I do. But I also miss out on a lot of fun things like homework and Halloween parades and homemade art on my fridge.

Sometimes I forget that even though I am not someone’s “Mom”, I still have an impact on the young children around me.

My friend CC sent me a picture this week: “Look what I found in my daughter’s back pack!” At first I couldn’t figure out what it was.

Then CC sent a follow up text: “She had a homework assignment to write about someone famous using words from last week’s spelling list.”

The words ‘green’, ‘field’, ‘street’ and ‘week’ were all circled –and spelled correctly… Well, most of them.

Then I read the page again:

ref-artOnce I was walking my dog with my mom and we were walking past Cat Wilson’s house and she came out and met us. She is a morning show host from 5:00am to 9:00am.

She is very nice. Cat lives in my neighborhood and she smiles at everyone. Sometimes she comes to our house for dinner.

She has blond hair and her yard is as green as a field. She lives right down the street from me.

My family sees her about once a week.

That is about it.

I don’t know why this struck me the way it did. I am sure it’s not the fact that she was assigned to write about ‘someone famous’ because I do not consider myself famous. It wasn’t entirely accurate as I don’t have blonde hair, and my yard is actually covered in brown weeds and I am on the air from 6:00am until 10:00am… But who’s fact checking? I think it’s that she said I was nice and I smile at everyone. It made me feel good.

It’s kind of silly, but I printed out the picture and taped it to my refrigerator.
