The Face Mask – 2020’s Hottest Fashion Accessory

Okay, maybe not, but the hotly contested topic of whether or not you should be wearing a mask, if you are healthy and showing no signs of symptoms, is a trending topic on most search engines. The CDC, the Center for Disease Control, is advising you to cover your face when you go out in public, and that’s good enough for me.

We already know that there is a shortage of adequate protection for those who need it most, those in the healthcare industry and on the front lines. In an effort to ease the demand on surgical-style masks, the at-home army has answered the call. Many everyday Americans have stepped up to start sewing protective face covers, myself includedWhile home-made masks might not be able to keep you from contracting the virus like a professional mask might, it’s still a solid line of defense to keeping others free from your germs. The more people wear them, the more protected we are as a whole.

If you’re suddenly wishing you had paid more attention in high school home economics, have no fear, there are some very easy options for those without sewing skills. Take a look at these creative suggestions that can protect and cover your face if you are looking for something cheap and handy.

  • Opt for a scarf in a pinch. By wrapping a scarf around your nose and mouth you are preventing the spread of germs and using items you probably already have on hand. The key is coverage.
  • Try a no-sew bandanna cover. Check out the instructions here.
  • Got an old T-shirt laying around? This creative tutorial for making a face covering walks you through the process step-by-step.

Now, if you have some sewing skills, you probably have already hit up your fabric stash and are ready to tackle the home-made mask.

JoAnn Fabrics has stepped up in a big way in this front. They are leading the way with everything the home sewer needs to make face coverings. To take it one step furtherthey launched a ‘Make to Give’ campaign, challenging Americans to make and donate 100 MILLION masks to medical personnel. Find EVERYTHING you need to make a face mask including patterns, tutorials and videos and links to supplies here

THANK YOU to JoAnn’s, THANK YOU to the individuals and organizations sewing masks for healthcare, and THANK YOU to all those putting your own health at risk to keep America going.

Behind every mask there is a face, and behind that, a story. – Marty Rubin
