The Cape Cod Maritime Museum (“CCMM”) Speaker Series continues Wednesday night, (May 18) with a talk by Dr. Edward Dunn on “The Lure and Lore of Marine Art” at 5 p.m.

The presentation will be a detailed and personal look at the new exhibit at CCMM that displays a representative series of mainly 19th-century marine paintings (some pieces are 20th century), and a discussion of their artistic merit. Also, via carefully researched descriptions, Dr. Dunn will point out their historical and geographic connections, transforming marine art from pretty paintings to actual historic documents.

The exhibit includes selected works from the collection and inventory of Dr. Edward and Mrs. Eleanor Dunn and their related businesses, New England Fine Art and Freeman & Reach Fine Art.

Items from the museum’s permanent collection including: scrimshaw, ship models and figureheads combine with this exhibit to provide the visitor an opportunity to experience the full scope of marine art.

Formerly a Marine service business and then a youth center, in 2004, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum moved into its current location overlooking the Hyannis inner harbor.

Ongoing programs include: A boatbuilding workshop for youths, sailing classes, classes for making sailor’s Valentines and the opportunity for the public to sail on the museum’s Crosby catboat replica, the Sarah.
