The Power of Music

As I was driving along the Mid-Cape Highway yesterday listening to music (like I always do) something came over me as I was listening to a Carly Simon song! What came over me was just how much music is a big part of my every day life. Obviously, I am on the radio and I’ve been on the radio for many years so that is probably the biggest reason why music is so prevalent in my world today…but even when I was a little girl music made me excited and happy!

I remember when I was a child…there were times when I didn’t feel good and my mother would bring me ginger ale and a toast and then she’d ask me what else she could do for me…and I would say “could you turn on the radio” because I knew the radio would distract me and perk me up” sure enough it did the trick!!!

I’m on two radio stations here on Cape…”99.9 The Q” and “Ocean 104.7”. So, when I’m driving…I go back and forth…listening to both radio stations. When I hear music on “Ocean 104.7” it brings me back to a special time earlier in my life. It’s amazing how a song can take you back to a special time and place and a very special person that was in your life. There have been times I have had a

tear in my eye remembering my high school and college sweetheart just by hearing a certain song on the radio and even though it may have brought me to tears it actually made me very happy and brought me back to a wonderful time in my life.

Through a special song you can remember people, places and even a certain smell can come back to your mind.

I actually go to nursing homes and play music for “the seniors” when I look over these sweet people I often see them crying…and it’s because as I was playing a Frank Sinatra song they were remembering their wedding day or a first dance they had with their spouse that has since passed-on.

It truly is remarkable how music can change a moment in your day and make you happy!

I simply just realized how powerful music really is in a person’s life!
