Who Doesn’t Love A Good Town Fair?

That one up there going “wheeeeeeeeee” is my kid.

I love a good town fair! It’s one of my family’s favorite summer traditions.

There’s nothing quite like a town fair. They can come in all different shapes, sizes and attractions, but there is just something magical about it. Have you been to one lately?

My family spent the better part of an evening enjoying the food, fun and atmosphere last weekend at the Sandwich town fair. The best part is, there is something for every age. It might just be one of the quintessential summertime draws – amusement rides, carnival food you have once a year, not to mention it usually turns out to be the social event of the summer.

My kids are of the age where wristband night at the rides is money well spent. For HOURS they went from ride to ride to ride, repeat. I am not a “Ride Mom” who loves rides, so it’s always nice to make sure the kids have a friend to go with. Even then, it was hard just watching them on some of the rides without feeling sick! That’s what memories are made of, right? Amusement ride adrenaline rush mixed with a sugar high.

And let’s talk for a moment about the carnival food. Depending on the fair, you might get a taste of the exotic or you might just relive all your traditional favorites. You’re thinking of fried dough now, aren’t you? Did you know it comes in toppings other than just powdered sugar? You would, if you went to the fair! Just remember to hit up the ATM and bring extra cash! Honestly though, can you really put a price tag on making memories?

My favorite part, besides seeing my kids having an amazing night, is that everyone ends up at the fair. I ran into old friends, new friends, friends I haven’t met yet — seems EVERYONE is happy for an excuse to get out of the house and have some fun.

Now that I’ve whet your appetite, make plans now, the Barnstable County Fair kicks off on Monday. Go for the great nightly entertainment, carnival attractions, rides or prize-winning animals. Go to catch up with friends who also love the fair. Go to people watch, or just go to because it’s tradition. Maybe I’ll see you there.
