Why I am Happy Summer is Over!

On Saturday I took down my red, white, and blue patriotic wreath and put up my fall wreath adored with autumnal leaves and pine cones. Yes it was technically August, but a chill had entered the air and I was itching for my favorite time on Cape Cod.

When people think of Cape Cod, I’m sure they think of wind swept beaches, boats and summer days. Fall has always held a special place in my heart blame on my Southern roots when a reprieve from heat well 100 degrees was welcomed and football (practically a religion where I’m from) took over our Friday, Saturday, AND Sundays. Also I was my birthday falls on or around Thanksgiving every year as does my youngest son, who was born on Thanksgiving day 2 years ago.

New England is made for fall in the same way that California is made for Summer. Here are things that I love doing each fall:

Apple Picking

There’s nothing more fall (or American) than Apple Pie. Picking your own is a fantastic family outing to support independent farms, teach your children where food comes from, and create something from produce you picked. The memories and pictures will last much longer than the apples you pick.

Halloween

No matter where you go, there’s something about the oldest homes in America making Halloween extra spooky and fun. Plus there’s Salem just a drive away. Even Netflix chose to film an Adam Sandler Halloween movie in Massachusetts this year.

Leaving Mid-Cape

I live and work in the mid-Cape area and when it comes to July and August I don’t venture further unless I have to. It’s just too crowded and if you don’t time it right the traffic coming and going off cape can turn standstill. Even the seasonal resorts and restaurants stay open through Columbus Day making September the perfect time to see a table with a ocean view.

Free Beach Parking and Dogs!

Depending on the beach most allow free parking and dogs on beaches after Labor Day. So in addition to it being a little less crowded it means you can visit beaches that aren’t in your area. And after fully exploring our local beach, I can’t wait to take my son to check out some a short drive away. Bonus we get to bring the dog too.
